For those of you who have never been in a book club and think that you
"don't know how to talk about books," I do have a few pointers. As you
are reading, mark any passages that seem particularly wonderful, or
even horrible, to you. It could be the writing, the idea or an image
that strikes you, but it's something to talk about. You'd be surprised
how often someone else has the same paragraph marked.
March 26 - This Earth of Mankind by Pramoedya Ananta Toer
This Earth of Mankind, the first novel in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's series known as the Buru Quartet, tells of the adventures of Minke, a young Javanese student living equally amongst the Dutch colonists and the colonized Javanese of late nineteenth-century. It is through a beautiful woman named Annelies and her family that Minke finds the strength to embrace the world of Indonesia, a world brimming with beauty and possibility as well as brutality and anger.
This remarkable tale, the first in the Buru Quartet, was originally recited orally by Indonesian political prisoner Toer to his fellow cellmates in daily installments. ~ publisher description.
April 30 - Kindred by Octavia Butler
Recently reissued in a twenty-fifth anniversary edition, Kindred is a thought-provoking novel of identity. In our day and age, it’s easy to look back to the antebellum South and vow that we would act differently than those living then. We’d like to think that we wouldn’t let ourselves become slaves, nor own them, but Butler shows us that the issue isn’t as black and white as we’d like to think. When a twentieth century woman is snatched back in time to rescue her slave-owning ancestor, we witness how easy it is to fall into the mindset of the times. By overlaying a modern sensibility on the social mores of the past, Butler demonstrates that the will to survive may compromise even our deepest beliefs. A very compelling and thought-provoking novel. ~ Dana
May 21 - Tales From the Town of Widows by James Canon
One Sunday morning, a band of guerrillas comes to Mariquita and takes all the men away, leaving behind only the priest and a fair-skinned boy disguised as a little girl. Without men, the small Colombian mountain village becomes a sinking wasteland filled with women resigned to food shortages, littered streets, and mourning. But Rosalba viuda de Patiño, wife of the former police sergeant, envisions a different future for the town of widows. Declaring herself magistrate, she promises to instill law and order, and restore the failing economy and infrastructure—and proceeds to create a utopia far greater than any revolutionary's imagined ideal society. Deft, rich, and darkly humorous, Tales from the Town of Widows marks the arrival of an unforgettable new literary talent. ~ from publisher description
