If you liked Tiger's Wife...
Well, I finally got around to reading Tiger's Wife by Tea Obrecht earier this year. If you've read it, then you know that her writing is lyrical, beautiful, slyly humorous, and wise beyond her twenty-five years. As I turned the pages, I could hear echoes of some of my favorite booksand authors. There was the wonder of Life of Pi, the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the subversity of Master and Margarita, the joy of Owen Meany, the haunting beauty of Michael Ondaatje's work, and the pure awe at the power of storytelling that I get from Salman Rushdie.
Those are some powerhouse comparisons, I know. Will Tiger's Wife become part of our canon the way these have? I don't know. But if she can earn these associations in her twenties, imagine what she still has inside her. So here's my list of recommendations if you liked Tiger's Wife. And if you didn't, you should read these anyway. They're awesome.
