Holy cow (there's a chapter on that)! This is an utterly fascinating look at human-animal clashes - everything from the annoying (garbage thieves and pickpockets) to the deadly (killer critters). And while it's easy to blame our four legged friends, more often than not, they're simply reacting to our careless behavior. Mary is in top form here - honest to god, each book is better than the last - with her trademark humor, endless curiosity, and willingness to totally immerse herself in her subject. In Vegas, she examines cadavers for evidence of bear attacks, gets mugged by a monkey in India, and faces down seagulls trying to destroy the pope's flowers at St. Peter's. Her genius as a science writer is that she's not a scientist; she's just gleefully inquisitive about rather morbid things. ~ Dana
An early novel from the author of Mexican Gothic and Velvet was the Night - it's consistently on "Vampire books you need to read" lists. (Yep, there are lists for everything.)
